Job Description

Post title: Islamic Studies & Science Teacher

Post title to which post holder reports:  The Head Teacher, The Proprietor and the AKF School Management Team

 

Primary Purpose of post:

·         support the Islamic ethos of the school;
·         exemplify how we as Muslims should fit in to and benefit society;
·         lead charity and community projects to benefit Muslim and non-Muslim members of society alike;
·         adopt professional standards of behaviour and appearance at all times;
·         work as a supportive member of the teaching staff;
·         participate in sharing good practice;
·         familiarise themselves with all the relevant documentation and policies;

Purpose of this Post:

·         to strive to instil in all pupils and colleagues a deep love for Allah the Almighty and the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings on him) through your personal example and enabling them to benefit from the Qur’an and Sunnah in their school and daily lives.
·         to support and maintain the School’s ethos and ensure its spiritual values are safeguarded.
·         to be responsible for managing and leading to a high standard the Islamic Studies & Science department of the School.
·         to teach Islamic Studies & Science as per the School timetable and as directed by the Head Teacher.
·         develop positive links with external organisations.
·         ensure that there is consistency of teaching, continuity in context and skills, and high standards of learning throughout the school.
·         to be responsible for promoting and developing Islamic adaab (good manners and behaviour) among pupils and staff.
·         ensure that planning, preparation, recording, assessment and reporting meet their varying learning and social needs;
·         maintain the positive ethos and core values of the school, both inside and outside the classroom;
·         contribute to constructive team-building amongst teaching and non-teaching staff, parents and wider community

General Requirements and Responsibilities:

·         to have knowledge of the Islamic values and disciplines, including the articles of faith and jurisprudence.
·         to have knowledge of professional teaching standards to ensure delivery of lessons to the highest quality.
·         show students how we can and should work together with Muslims and non-Muslims to reach our common aims.
·         run charity and other projects to show students Islam teaches that we treat all members of society with the same love and compassion.
·         to provide guidance to pupils through exemplary conduct according to Qur’an and Sunnah.
·         to be able to communicate effectively.
·         to call the adhan and lead the daily congregational prayers (usually Dhuhr and Asr prayers).
·         to support, assist and act as a point of reference for our diverse School community on spiritual and faith matters.

Coordinator Responsibilities:

·         to author, maintain, promote and implement the policy documents for the department.
·         to take the lead in promoting the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC) of all pupils at the School.
·         to be responsible for encouraging and promoting dynamic and creative teaching using innovative methods including ICT.
·         to track and monitor pupil achievement, ensuring periodic assessment of learning during all stages of KS3/KS4.
·         working with the Head Teacher, to appraise all staff within the department according to the School’s policy.
·         to ensure that all planning, assessments, reviews and reports are completed to a high standard and presented to the Head Teacher.
·         in liaison with the Head Teacher, ensure the department is suitably resourced.
·         to audit the department through periodic self-evaluation.
·         to provide an Islamic perspective on aspects of the School curriculum as requested from time to time by the Head Teacher and other teachers.
·         coordinate the development of a cohesive and effective long-term plan in your subject.
·         ensure that medium-term planning meets all school requirements.
·         review, monitor and evaluate current practice (including schemes and policies) and provide feedback to the Senior Leadership Team.
·         support, motivate and advise staff, and work alongside them in the development of their classroom practice, where appropriate.
·         lead by example, through good classroom practice.
·         disseminate information to the staff, and provide INSETS to promote staff development and improve classroom practice.
·         contribute action-planning in the subject for the School Improvement Plan.
·         maintain an up-to-date knowledge of local and national initiatives, by attending relevant courses.
·         to be responsible for the budget allocated to the subject area, prioritise resource needs as indicated in the School Improvement Plan.
·         to participate in meetings which relate to the school’s management, curriculum, administration or organisation.
·         supervising and teaching any pupils whose teacher is not present of needed.

Teaching Responsibilities:

·         teach Islamic Studies & Science as per the School timetable and as directed by the Head Teacher.
·         implement agreed school policies and guidelines.
·         support initiatives decided by the Head teacher and staff.
·         plan appropriately to meet the needs of all pupils, through differentiation of tasks.
·         be able to set clear targets, based on prior attainment, for pupils’ learning.
·         provide a stimulating classroom environment, where resources can be accessed appropriately by all pupils.
·         keep appropriate and efficient records, integrating formative and summative assessment into weekly and termly planning.
·         report to parents on the development, progress and attainment of pupils.
·         maintain good order and discipline amongst pupils, in accordance with the school’s behaviour policy.
·         participate in staff and parent’s meetings which relate to the school’s management, curriculum, administration or organisation.
·         communicate and co-operate with specialists from outside agencies.
·         lead, organise and direct support staff within the classroom.
·         participate in the performance management system for the appraisal of his own performance, or that of other teachers in his department.

Other Responsibilities as Required:

·         lead morning and afternoon collective prayer (du’a) when pupils have lined up.
·         provide weekly Islamic ‘nasiha’ during staff briefings.
·         participate in staff and parent meetings.
·         take part in professional development training including the organization and delivery of staff halaqa (study circle).
·         conduct assemblies as per the School rota.
·         assist with staff appointments when requested.
·         represent the School at external events and meetings as might be required from time to time by the Head Teacher and SMT.
